COSAFA Cup Match Preview: Bafana eye first Group A win against Zimbabwe

COSAFA Cup Match Preview: Bafana eye first Group A win against Zimbabwe

South Africa will face off with their neighbours, Zimbabwe, in their second match in the 2025 COSAFA Cup Group A on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 15h00.

The game is scheduled to take place at the Dr. Petrus Molemela Stadium in South Africa’s country’s judicial capital’ Bloemfontein.

Bafana Bafana started their Group A campaign with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Mozambique at the Free State Stadium, where António Sumbane grabbed a 73rd-minute winner on Wednesday.

As a result, South Africa are placed fourth in the group standings, but they are only two points behind leaders, Mozambique, who will take on Mauritius on Saturday.

A win over Zimbabwe would see coach Vela Khumalo’s Bafana side boost their ambitions of progressing to the semi-finals ahead of their final Group A game against Mauritius on June 10.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe will also be targeting their first win in this year’s tournament after being held to a 0-0 draw by Mauritius at the Free State Stadium on Wednesday.

Therefore, the Warriors are placed at the top of the Group A standings, just two points above second-placed Mauritius and they will wrap up their group stage campaign with a game against Mozambique on June 10.

In Head-to-Head stats, South Africa and Zimbabwe have met 18 times across all competitions since their maiden meeting in August 1992.

Bafana have the edge in this Southern African rivalry, having won eight matches compared to the Warriors’ seven victories, while three games were drawn.
